The Institution of Engineers Australia, often shortened to
IEAust and trading as
Engineers Australia, is a professional body and
not-for-profit organization dedicated to being the national forum for the advancement of the
engineering field within
Australia. It has over 79,000 members coming from all engineering disciplines, 27,000 of whom are students.
The organization began in the late 19th century during the
Industrial Revolution, recognizing the need for a single body to represent engineers, rather than the numerous smaller organizations that existed then. Its first council meeting was held in 1919, electing
William Henry Warren of the
University of Sydney as the Engineers Australia's first President.
The current patron of Engineers Australia is Australia's
Governor-General, Major General
Michael Jeffery.
